The Photographer's Eye: Part I

This is Part I of a two-part post. Part II to come later this week.

As a photographer, you see the world differently than a  non-photographer. That's kinda cool.

You look at the world around you, as opposed to someone who just sees the world - which is akin to listening to music as opposed to hearing music. Big difference.

You seek out interesting subjects, as I did when I looking for animals to photograph in the Costa Rican rain forest on a recent workshop that I co-lead with my friend Rob Knight.

Had I not been looking, I would not have spotted the well-camflouged Jesus Christ lizard in the scene below.

Yes, I used a few Photoshop enhancements to make the subject stand out in the photograph - because I wanted you to see this amazing animal.

So you should feel prod of yourself! You see light, forms, colors and shapes - as well as faces - in your own unique way. That's what makes you a photographer. Again, that's kinda cool.

If you would like to join other photographers who enjoy seeing and picturing their world, join one of my workshops. We see and shoot all day long. I can also show you some Photoshop and Lightroom enhancements that will help make your subjects stand out in a scene.

Explore the light,
Rick

P.S. If you can't make a workshop, my app, Rick Sammon's 24/7 Photo Buffet, has many examples of seeing.

Rick Sammon's 24/7 Photo Buffet

My flagship comprehensive how-to app: Rick Sammon's 24/7 Photo Buffet - iPhone and iPad. It's basically an interactive, how-to e-book that you can keep with you 24/7.

24/7 features more than 100 tips, lots on flash photography and lighting.
This app features my best tips for making pictures . . . indoors, outdoors, in bright light and in low light, with a flash and with a diffuser and reflector.

24/7 includes tips on creating . . . creative Speedlite photographs.
People, wildlife, landscape, city scape photography are covered.

Rick Sammon's iHDR

My newest how-to app for the iPad is now available: Rick Sammon's iHDR.

This app (formerly called Rick Sammon's HDR Portfolio) is packed with HDR photos (my latest from around the world), info and movies. It's a great way to learn and experience HDR.

The app has the same great content as HDR Portfolio, but with an added Favorites section. So, if you already have the app, you don't need to download this version.

It's called iHDR because the app is all about how you can create cool HDR images using your imagination – combined with HDR photography innovations.

Rick Sammon's Underwater Wonders

Calling all moms and dads, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters - and friends and neighbors who have or know youngsters. Underwater Wonders, my first iPad app for kids (as well as scuba divers), is now available.

Underwater Wonders is not a photography how-to app/app book, like most of my other apps. Rather, it's an app/app book that falls into the Nature, Wildlife and Marine Conservation categories.

Here is a nice review of the app.

I took most of the photographs in the app while I was president and chief underwater photographer (1980 to 1995) of the marine conservation organization CEDAM International, an organization dedicated to Conservation, Education, Diving and Marine-research.

Underwater Wonders
, designed for kids and for adults who are kids are heart, features underwater photographs of my favorite marine animals. The photographs are accompanied by fascinating and fun fish facts, as well as some of my personal anecdotes.

Butterfly Wonders

Butterfly Wonders: Beautiful butterflies and section on close-up photography –  iPad only. Cool section on how-to take close-up pictures!

Friday's Fab Photographer: George Stark

This week's Friday's Fab Photographer is George Stark Take it away George!

Photographing anything is my passion.

I love the rush of taking the shot and the process of sitting at the computer bringing the image to life!  I still get giddy waiting for the print to roll out of the printer.

There were so many times when I'd be driving through the countryside and see something that was a great shot, but I'd keep on driving, only to have the image haunt me forever. So I started slamming on the brakes. I consider myself to be a "Just off the Road" Photographer. Not that I have anything against hiking, but I find the majority of my shots are taken with my rear end hanging over the roadway not far from the car.

I enjoy the challenge of taking the shot at a location anyone can drive up to and finding "My Shot" in the viewfinder.

The images here were taken . . .  "Just off the Road"

Above:
Driving through Eastern Washington I hit the brakes.  My tripod was inches off the highway.
Three shot bracketed HDR, Lightroom 3,  Photomatix, and CS5.

Above:

Set up the tripod just off Hwy 101 Gold Beach, Oregon.
Slow shutter speed 0.7secs  blurring the water. Processed in Lightroom 2 and CS4.

Above:

Near a parking lot in Santa Monica, California. The wavy fence caught my eye.
A tripod, three shot bracketed HDR processed with lightroom 3,  Photomatix, CS5, and little Topaz Adjust Plug-In

Above:
On my way into a local restaurant in down town Seattle on a sunny day. The windows just caught my eye.
Leaning on a parking meter for this shot. I processed with Lightroom 3, CS5, and a little use of theTopaz Adjust Plug-in.

What I love about photography is there is always something new to learn and experience!

The next time you see that shot "Hit the Brakes

Thanks to Rick for the privilege of appearing on his Blog!

Cheers,
George

P.S. For info on Topaz, see my Creative Plug-ins Page.
