You Can't Have More Fun On a Workshop - while learning the art and craft of photography

rick sammon a.jpg

Here's the thing about my digital photography workshops: we have a ton of fun making pictures and processing our images. We also have a blast before and after the official shoots.

Don't get me wrong. We take our photography very, very seriously, but as my friend Hal "Bull" Schmitt says: "If you're not having fun, you are doing something wrong."

What's more, the photographers - at all skill levels - who come on my workshops, leave the workshops not only with good pictures, but with new good friends.

My 2013 digital photography workshops - which I have been organizing fore more than 20 years - are filling up fast. And I'm putting together my 2014 workshops. If you want to immerse yourself in photography for a few days, these experiences can't be beat.

If you come on a workshop, you'll hear me say: "Stick like glue to the instructor." I'm there to help you every step of the way!

I hope you can join me in the Conwy Valley, North Wales November 5 and 6, 2013 for a free  - yes free - photo walk and mini-workshop. (The walk and workshop are free. All other costs are on your own.)

New news: The event sold out in a few hours, but you can get on the waiting list. Info below.

I photographed in this picturesque valley (about an hour from Manchester) last year, where I made my photographs in this post. We also made a few videos during our trip. Check 'em out.

The other photographs in this post were made by my friend and local photographer Pierino Algieri, who will be co-leading the walk/workshop with me. Pierino's wonderful work can be found on his web site. I can't wait to shoot with him again!

Shoot me an email if your are interested in joining our small group of photographers. Please copy my contact in Conwy, Anthony Woodhouse. Anthony will put you on the list and send you follow up info.

We'll be staying at the Meadow Sweet Hotel - which is one of my favorites hotels on the planet. You can contact the hotel at: info@meadowsweethotel.com. The hotel is within walking distance of the bridge and cottage in the photograph above.

We'll try to find the white horses of North Wales, but I can't promise. We will photograph the castles and old churches, where I'll teach HDR.

We'll trek through the countryside, where we will photograph wonderful waterfalls - and even double waterfalls. Pierino and I will show you how to get great shots at slow shutter speeds.

The Camera Looks Both Ways

looks1 copy.jpg

The camera looks both ways: in picturing the subject, you are also picturing a part of yourself. In other words, you are a mirror. The mood, the energy, the feeling and the emotion that you project are reflected by the subject - in his or her face and especially the eyes. Body language can also be reflected.

As you can tell by the expressions on the subject's faces in the opening photograph for this post, I was having a blast directing this shot, which I took in a sombrero shop in Panama. I wanted a fun shot.

Above: II was being more serious behind the camera. My mood is reflected in the model's face. Guess where I took this shot. :-)

Take a look at the faces of these school kids, which I photographed in Lombok, Indonesia. Once again, you can imagine the look on my face. I was having a blast, and so were the kids.

Here's a quick tip for photographing people: Don't wear sunglasses when photographing people. If you do, they can't see your eyes - the windows to your soul.

You'll find more people photography tips in my book, "Face to Face," and in my app, "24/7 Photo Buffet."

On-line, check out my classes on Kelby Training. Lots of people pictures.

By the way, my favorite people photography lens is the Canon 24-105mm IS lens. It's great for portraits and environmental portraits. All my gear is listed on My Gear page.
